Skiagraphs ~ Shadow Writers – X-rays

The early name for an x-ray image was Skiagraph, which can also be translated from Greek as shadow writing.

This project is in-progress and celebrates a large collection of animal x-rays, including some unusual images of a tortoise, iguana, fox, and cockatiel. The essence of each animal is captured through these darkly magical images. The animals transcend beyond, yet in the same moment continue to dwell within their structural forms.

These x-rays of family pets were originally used as medical diagnostic tools.

Origin: French sciagraphie, via Latin from Greek skiagraphia, from skia "shadow" and graph "to write."
